National S'mores Day is August 10th

That's right, time to break out the graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars!

As it turns out, every year on August 10th is National S'mores Day - even though it's not an AUTHORIZED "National Holiday" (which requires an Act of Congress to be officially recognized).

The traditional S'mores recipe, which is rumored to have been created in the 1920s by the Campfire Girls and then later discovered and popularized by the Girl Scouts of America, is as follows:

Ingredients:

Chocolate candy bar
Graham crackers
Marshmallows

Instructions:

1. Break off a square of Graham cracker
2. Add a piece of chocolate.
3. Toast a big marshmallow over a campfire.
4. Add the hot marshmallow.
5. Top it with another Graham cracker.
6. Eat!

Of course, the variations nowadays are many (especially since the invention of the microwave which led to fewer burnt 'mallows). With so many varieties of chocolates and chocolatey products to use, so many kinds of marshmallows, alternative choices for standard graham crackers, and unusual ways to combine these elements - you're looking at a huge number of choices to celebrate your National S'mores Day as you please!

Why, there are even recipes for a "S'mores-tini" which tend to include: Whipped vodka, dark Creme de Cacao, Bailey's Irish Cream, Frangelico, Half & Half, marshmallow fluff and a graham cracker crusted rim on your martini glass!

My personal favorite variation of the S'mores when it comes to recipes is the S'mores Brownie, which is made by simply making a standard batch of chocolate brownies from a boxed mix, and 5 minutes before fully-baked, you sprinkle on miniature marshmallows and top with graham cracker squares!

When it comes to pre-made S'mores, you've got your choice in the candy/snack aisles:
- Moon Pie
- Hershey S'mores bar
- S'mores-flavored Pop Tarts

Since this is a product review blog, I might as well mention an actual product which I plan on employing in tonight's S'mores-related experiments:

The Güd Füd chocolate-stuffed marshmallow!

Yes, it's a marshmallow that has been created with an internal pocket full of chocolate goodness! The size of the marshmallow comes close to half the size of your average full-sized marshmallow - but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in flavor (and frankly, I find it to be the perfect bite-size, since they tend to come in either individually-wrapped packs or in three-packs).

I will be experimenting using these little chocolate-stuffed 'mallows in a typical S'mores sandwich to see if it really adds that extra chocolate flavor beyond the bar. Heck, I might even skip the bar and see if it provides enough chocolate taste to still provide a decent S'more!

And if we get a little daring later on, we might even try it out with the fruit-jelly-filled marshmallows that Güd Füd also makes!

What are your favorite S'mores recipes that deviate from the ones the Campfire Girls made so very long ago?
